Photo Exhibit: UN Headquarters, Geneva
June 17-25, 2009
4th International Conference on Human Rights and Prison Reform
organized
by C.U.R.E (Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants)
Photos
will bring direct experience from places and people who are
as far from such a conference as can be imagined, into discussions
of international policy at the United Nations.
This exhibit represents Alan Pogue's body of work documenting
US prisons over the past 40 years including Texas' Death Row.
Also included are images from a 2007 visits to prisons and
prisoners in various countries thoughout Latin and South America.
Dignity of the Individual is a book with photographs from the 2007 trip which
was put together and presented by CURE to the Inter-American Commission on
Human Rights of the OAS. This played a role in adoption of
a listing of rights for people in prisons in the Americas.
The title refers to a founding document for the OAS (Organization
for American States), the American Declaration of Rights and
Duties of Man. A new project, to document conditions in African
prisons and create a similar document, is in the planning
stages.

C.U.R.E.
and the work of the Sullivans The
conference agenda begins Sunday June 21, at 7pm. People active
in criminal justice reform from around the world will be able
to meet, learn more about issues, compare experiences and
meet UN ambassadors from their own and other countries. There
is no charge to attend and CURE is committed to raising funds
to allow participants to stay in a local hostel including
support for breakfast and local transportation.
This conference in Geneva is a milestone of achievement, one
of many over the years for Charlie and Pauline Sullivan -
and all those who have worked to bring greater awareness of
humanitarian concerns into the hidden precincts of prisons
nationally and internationally.
This all started back in 1972 with the proverbial church
basement meetings in small towns in Texas that were the inception
of Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants.
